The Military Fortress
of St Louis :
When Saint Louis, fights about
it against Henri III Plantagenet and Pierre Duke of Brittany,
came to Angers in 1230 it made quickly rebuild the Citadel
and the Ramparts while going until requisitioning materials
planned for work of the Cathedral. It is at this time that
the 17 turns of the enclosure of the Castle were high. Work
lasted of 1230 to 1240.
The surface occupied by the castle is 2,5 ha and its circumference
measures nearly one kilometre. The dark colour of the turns
comes from the roof slate used for construction. It is a sober
unit, whose military and defensive character is immediately
apparent. The castle had two doors having drawbridge and harrows,
one giving on the city, the other on the countryside. A brother
of St Louis, Charles I become Count d' Anjou and create the
first Capitean dynasty of the Counts of Anjou.
