The Castle History
:
The headland which dominates Maine is used since the oldest
times as point of defence more particularly to protect the
area from the attacks and invasions coming from the west.
Indeed with the IX Th century the Francs must be kept against
the incursions of Breton initially then the Norman ones then.
The first Counts d' Anjou was installed in a building located
close to current Cathedral Maurice Saint and the Bishops at
the site of current Château. In July 851 the Normans
threaten the city and the Dudon Bishop exchanges the buildings
of his Bishopric with those of the Count. It is from there
that the Counts build the first medieval fortress.
Established on a Gallo-Roman site and around the dwelling
of the first counts d' Anjou, the castle of Angers is a remarkable
example of the defensive architecture of the middle Ages the
fortress Angevine was built by Saint-Louis in 1230. Powerful
of its 17 turns, the castle presents at the glances an astonishing
silhouette. Thus its famous towers were built in an alternation
of schist and tuffeau.
In 1204 the King of France Philippe August seizes Anjou at
the expense of King of England John without Earth. With the
death of King de France Louis VIII the Lion, certain Feudal
conduits by the Duke Pierre of Brittany benefit from the minority
of Louis IX and revolt against the Regent White of Castile.
It is following these events that the enormous fortress is
built whose turns still remain, it shelters royal troops ready
to intervene.
