Tapestries of the
Apocalypse :
These Tapestries constitute an
exceptional unit. They were carried out at the request of
Louis I of Anjou by Nicolas Bataille and Robert Poinçon
of 1375 to 1382 according to drawings of Henequen of Bruges.
They illustrate the Bible of St Jean written at the end of
1st century after JC, but at the same time contain information
on the political and social life of the end of XIVth century.
These Tapestries make more than 100 meters length on 4m50
top; it is a single whole in the world at the same time by
the dimension and the quality of work carried out. They were
dispersed at the time of the French revolution and were recovered
partly in the middle of the XIXth century. There remain 70
tables of the 100 original ones.
The Gallery of the Apocalypse was built in 1952 on the site
of the old kitchens and other buildings disappeared from the
baronial Court, it was refitted in 1996. The visit proceeds
in a space slightly enlightened in order to prolong the lifespan
of these heads of work.
