Continuation of
History :
Finally, and finally king Louis-Philippe made of it a monument
dedicated to the victories of the French Revolution and
Napoleon 1st Empire.
The achieved work is considerable. In the initial it was
necessary to create foundations to support such building
(every pillar supports two times the weight of the Eiffel
tower) then to build and carve each face.
Thus the Arch of Triumph is the greatest set of French sculpture
of the 19th century. Four well known groups rest to the
arch base: the Departure of the Volunteers said "the
Marseillaise" by Rough, the Resistance of 1814 and
the Peace by Etex, the Triumph of 1810 by Cortot. But the
plank of 137 meters, which makes the turn of the monument
with some two high meters character, is less well known:
it represents the Departure and the Return of the French
Armies. The Departure begins from the Kléber Avenue
and continuous facing the Champs Elysées; the Return
is side Avenue of the Large Army.
Also four high reliefs are placed to the rank of the pillars
superior part on the main facades: funeral ceremony of Marceau,
on the right facing the Champs Elysées, on the left
the battle of Aboukir, the Passage of the Arcole Bridge
on the right side facing the avenue of the Big Army and
the fall of the Alexandria city on the left side. Upon the
four interior arch faces were registered 174 names of battles
and 700 names of French military heroes
