The Triumphal Arch
of the Star:
Until the end of the XVIIIth, the Place de l’Etoile
is only a mound of land which welcomes a crossroads out
of Paris. Of the Louis XV Place (Concorde) creation, the
architect Gabriel makes so that only one regular slope joins
the Louis XV Place and the Neuilly Bridge. Between 1768
and 1774 one peaks the mound and one creates a circular
esplanade under instructions of engineer Perronet. In 1787,
during the building of the Enclosure of the General Farmers,
Ledoux establishes two pavilions of concession on the place.
These are demolished in 1860 when the concession moves back
to the Porte Maillot. It is Hittorff who elaborates the
facades of the place circumference which are immediately
camouflaged by Houseman that doesn't appreciate them behind
a triple arranged of trees.
In 1836, the Arch is inaugurated solemnly. No artist participates
to the demonstration. The return of the emperor's ashes
will be the entry in the history of this monument dedicated
to the army glory.
In 1854 only the Place de l’Etoile, of the 12 avenues,
is drawn. Paris spreads. Since many demonstrations had it
for decor.
