THE HISTORY OF NOTRE
DAME DE PARIS :
-Its construction lasted about one hundred
eighty (180) years
- For the time that the cathedral was constructed, the crusades
took place. Indeed, the third crusade had begun in the cathedral
of Notre Dame De Paris.
- The cathedrals in general had constructed because of the
religious devotion that happened during this time.
- Notre Dame De Paris was also constructed because Paris
became then a politic and commercial centre that it was
important that Paris has its own cathedral and that it would
be better than of other cathedrals.
- - To show the power of Paris, the Bishop Maurice De Sully
had begun the cathedral. Maurice De Sully had seen the first
Gothic cathedral, Saint-Denis, and he was impressed.
- - King Louis VII had supported and encouraged the construction
of the cathedral, and then it had an advantage on the other
cathedrals constructed in this time.
- Napoleon the 1st that returns the cathedral to the cult
in 1802 will be consecrated there December 2, 1804. The
government of Louis-Philippe, submitted to the pressure
of the Romantic Movement embodied by the novel of Victor
Hugo titled Notre Dame De Paris (1831), will confide in
1843 the works of rehabilitation of the cathedral to John
Le Baptist Lassus and Eugene Viollet-Le-Duc. The first dies
in 1857. Viollet-Le-Duc assumes alone the yard until his
death, in 1879.
- Since 1992, the progress of technology permits to give
back to the outside stone of the Cathedral blackened by
the centuries, its original purity and whiteness.
