BIRTH
AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE EIFFEL TOWER :
Chosen among 107 projects, the construction of the Eiffel
Tower was decided to crown the Universal-Exposure of 1889.
The actors of this exploit are: Gustave Eiffel, entrepreneur,
Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier, engineers, Stephen Sauvestre,
architect.
50 engineers and drawers executed 5300 drawings in their sides,
and 132 workers took part on the building site.
1- Construction :
The foundations, begun January
26, 1887, took five months.
- Champ-de-Mars side: pillars 2 and 3, no difficulties.
- Seine side: pillars 1 and 4, sunk with the compressed air
using inserted
Sheet boxes to 5 m under water.
In each of the foundations are sunken 4 masonry massifs that
support the 4 pols of every Tower‘s leg,
The installation of the 1st floor :
the installation’s difficulty resided in the
departure to the basis of the arbatrables that were should
be directed in a inclined position "in door-to-forgery"
to meet the horizontal beams of the 1st floor. The perfect
assembly is achieved thanks to hydraulic jacks that assure
the movement of every foot and especially by an original device
of scaffolding surmounted of boxes of sand which emptied to
adjust the slant of the arbatrables. The jacks don't exist
anymore, but the New Society of exploitation of the Eiffel
Tower reconstituted one that is exposed in the Ferrie pavilion
in the 1st floor of the Tower.
