The Haut Koenigsbourg is the
third France tourist site in province behind the Mount St.
Michel and Chambord. 550000 people visit it every year.
It costs 10 millions francs of works per year. The repairing
of the only roofing which endured the storm of 1999 will
cost 30 millions for 5 years! The dungeon is high of 62
m.
320 walks permit to go up upon the site. It has 300m of
length. A source situated to 500m nourished the cistern
constructed at the summit. Some defensive walls notably
those of the principal bastion make more 9 meters thick
to the basis! The castle is open 362 days per year (except
25/12, 1/1 and 1/5)!
The castle history which acted the Big Illusion decor of
Jean Renoir. With 600 000 visitors per year, the Haut Koenigsbourg
is one of the more visited France sites. Situated to the
summit of a Vosges ball, it dominates the Alsace plain.
Destroyed repeatedly, it remained in ruin until the beginning
of the XXth century. In 1901, Guillaume II decides its restoration
by a style which revisits the middle Ages in an astute way.
The building causes of straightaway of the polemics deprived
of rear political thoughts. Indeed, the Haut- Koenigsbourg
is a symbol of the triumphant Germanise.
