
The reconstruction
:
1899 Selestats, German city since 1871, made gift by the
ruin to the emperor Guillaume II May 8. This one loads the
architect Bodo Ebhardt to rebuild the castle as it was in
a Thierstein era.
1901 beginning of works
1908 May 13, day of the works completion, the symbolic key
of the Haut- Koenigsbourg principal entry was handed to
the emperor.
1919 after the First World War, the Haut- Koenigsbourg becomes
again French and it was registered to the National Palaces
list .
1940 - 1944 during the Alsace occupation by the Germans,
the Colmar museum collections, notably the famous Issenheim’s
retable Matthias Grünewald, but also the Strasbourg
cathedral, the town hall and the Strasbourg museums tapestries
are transferred for the castle to be hidden there.
1944 November 28, the American soldiers occupy the Haut
Koenigsbourg until the Colmar liberation.
