“Island with beautiful
water", well named by the pre-Columbian populations!
Because, in Basse-Terre( Low-Ground),a mountainous and volcanic
island of the Guadeloupean archipelago, rivers, cascades,
ponds, marsh intermingle.
There, with the foot of the Sulphur mine, surrounded of
fumerolles, hot and sulfurous sources, witnesses of an active
volcanicity to which Guadeloupe owes its existence, develops
one of the most beautiful tropical forests of the Small
Antilles with the exuberant, original and varied species:
in addition to several hundreds of species of trees, the
park of Guadeloupe shelters a myriad of ferns, including
the sumptuous arborescent ones reaching 15 meters of height,
and nearly 100 species of orchises, including 5 endemic,
all more complex and attractive the ones than the others.
As for fauna, in addition to 11 species of bald mice,, let
us quote in particular two "originals": Dynaste
Hercules or "Pit sawyer" which plays the records
- reaching 18 cm of length, it is the largest insect in
the world and the black peak of Guadeloupe only sedentary
peak of the Small Antilles.
