Until the Middle Ages,
the ancient forest of Der extended from banks of the Seine
until those of the Marne, more in the north. In XIIIth
century, the knights of the order of the Temple and that
of Hospital of Saint-Jean-of-Jerusalem settle in this
massif(solid mass), clear it and develop there an economy
based on agriculture, pisciculture, sylviculture and mining
(tileries, forging mills).
From this time remain a multitude of ponds, as well as
toponymy: forest of the Temple, forest of the East...
Located at the point of meeting of contrasted natural
areas, the regional Natural reserve of the Forest of the
East gathers a mosaic of landscapes. The central sector
of the park occupies a part of a wet country, characterized
by grounds very slightly undulating and loaded with water.
In the North-West a coast appears, which constitutes the
contact with chalky country. In south-east the coast of
the Bars, made up of a plate deeply notched by valleys
starts. Lastly, the large alluvial plain of Aube forms
the northern limit of the park. Secret country, the park
delivers with parsimony specificities of its territory
where water and the forest mix narrowly. The beauty of
its built inheritance is due to its volumes, materials
used and the space organization of the villages.
