the solid mass of Bauges
seems a green and fresh mountain whereas the urbanization
is spread on all its circumference (Chambéry, Aix-les-Bains,
Annecy, Albertville) and that the alpine motorways girdle
it closely. The park includes a heart with strong mountainious
print and a crown turned towards the hills and the large
valleys of the periphery. The Bauges were a populated
mountain when the ground required many arms for the agriculture:
the solid mass and its margins counted to twenty thousand
inhabitants atthe apogee of a peasant civilization, about
1850. These village communities inherited the reclamations
pioneers of the religious orders which worked the face
of Bauges: the Benedictines of which it remains only a
long-lived memory in Bellevaux; Carthusian monks in Aillon-le-Jeune
which one undertook to restore the convent; cistercians
at Tamié whose abbey always shelters an active
and a welcoming community. The villages maintained a denseand
intensive agriculture, conqueroing the fields in the valley
and exploiting the pastures in mountain. Today, there
remains less than five thousand inhabitants in the heart
of Bauges. This apparent depopulation is in fact a redistribution
of the population toward the periphery, that was more
attractive at the moment of the rural migration.
