Slopes combed of grapevines,
festooned of villages; leafy people of the forest perched
on the plate; small peaceful small valleys, Roman churches...
Under the large skys of the country, here isthe "Mountain",
with its gilded flesh of grape harvest and its deep forests.
Only complete and continuous cut of the tertiary grounds
in the East of the Paris basin, the Mountain of Rheims
is a gigantic stacking of sedimentary geological layers.
The country chalk, contemporary of the last dinosaurs,
the clays with lignite of the tertiary era and the glacial
silts of quaternary form a geological cream slice of seventy
million years, explained in the teaching Mailly-Champagne
career. This slow sedimentation, reorganized 15 000 to
20 000 years ago by the work of the glaciers, determines
the three large features of the relief: calcareous slope,
tabular plates and chalky plains. To this natural triptych,
the men gave, along the centuries, shape and face. In
the north, in the south, the east, the amended slopes
are crowned with vineyards. On the plate, the forest was
worked by sylviculture. To the west, the landscape deploys
its soft curves and the checkerwork, green and yellow,
of the agricultures and the pastures.
