Granitic solid mass in
the heart of calcareous Burgundy, Morvan is a country
of hard mountains, of an average altitude (from 400 to
900 from north to the south), but notched of steepsided
valleys and major deep breaks )Traversed by fast rivers
appreciated by the canoeists, it is covered at its tops
of dense forests, which enamel, on the slopes, scrap-metals
and moors with brooms. The depths of valley, made up of
granitic grounds where water stagnates, are dominated
by marshy meadows with snap rings and carex. Characterized
by a dispersed habitat, Morvan did not never have a real
capital, but remains subjected to the influence of Castle-Chinon
and three large cities posted at its borders: Autun in
the south, Avallon in the north and Saulieu in the east.
