The plain of Scarpe and
Escaut was a sea then it became an earth, then sea before
becoming an alluvial plain. Scarpe and Escaut slowly dug
the sands and the sea clays. Not very broken, these grounds
stack up between 16 and 45 ms. During Antiquity, only
the marshes disputed the ground with the dark forests.
