The solid mass of Vercors
is located at the heart of Dauphiné. The abrupt
cliffs which girdle it make a true natural citadel, that
was isolated for a long time from the areas which surround
it, the valleys of Isere, Drac and Drôme Water cut
in this limestone mass of the deep throats, the majestic
circuses, the caves and the pits among the most famous
in Europe. The interior of the solid mass is made up of
wooded plates and green small valleys with a landscape
modelled by agriculture.
This geomorphological diversity and the several climatic
influences (continental, Mediterranean and alpine) make
a territory with a rich and varied cultural and natural
inheritance of it. Seven natural areas make up the country:
in the north, Quatre-Montagnes; in the North-West, Coulmes;
in the west, Royans; in the center, historical Vercors;
in the east, Trièves; in south-east, Diois and
in south-west, Gervanne.
