In 1931, at the time of the colonial exposure, a provisional
zoological park of 3 hectares, inspired of that of Hamburg,
was built in the forest of Vincennes. Success was as such
that the National museum of Natural History proposed the
construction of a park much larger and final. Thus on
15 hectares of grounds yielded by the Town of Paris, the
current Zoological park was inaugurated on June 2, 1934
by President Albert Lebrun.

The Zoological gardens of Paris form a part of the Laboratory
of Conservation of the Animals species of the National
Natural history museum of Natural History. This publicly-owned
establishment "with a scientific, cultural and professional
character" posseses an autonomous budget and does
not receive any subsidy. Approximately 150 species of
birds and 110 species of mammals are represented there
(that is to say more than 1000 animals).
Reopening of the "Large Rock", new presentations
of animals, modern teaching programs in order to meet
the need of a closer contact with nature.
