  RHÔNE AT SÈTE CHANNAL

From Sète to Beaucaire 97 Km Ecluse de Saint Gilles

To sail on the Channel from Rhone to Sète is to appreciate the size of vast wides of Petite Camargue, burned with sun. The landscape which will be offered to you is a masterly scene where the actors follow one another unceasingly. A cloud of pink flamingos, a horde of bulls and a gallop of camarguais horses, such will be the memories of your cruise. At the time of an evening summer, on the animated quays, you will benefit from the cordial environment of the inhabitants. Ranging from Oyster of Bouzigues to the gardiane of toro accompanied by camarguais rice. The whole is sprinkled with the wine of Sands or of the Twyers-side, sail with the songs of the cicadas, under a bright sun.

   THE SMALL CAMARGUE

The small languedocien Camargue spreads on a long coastal cord from the Gulf of Lions, of which the greatest part is around Aigues-Mortes (20 000 ha). This set of ponds, swamp and saltworks is to be respected. Fresh and brackish waters, watery plants and planktons, migratory birds, form a fragile ecological balance. With softness, let yourself invaded by this unsimilar decoration and imagine a pink Flemish take-off to the setting sun, the black bulls and a gallop of white horses in full heart of this vast wide called "Small Camargue".

THE JOUSTS OR KNIGHTS OF THE CHANNAL

Here is a nautical tradition anchored in the Languedocien cultural inheritance. Take two boats face to face, propelled by ten oarsmen, each one on a channel. Add to each team, one red and the other blue one, a jouster armed with his tended lance, upright on the tintaine (back of the boat), and protect it by a heavy bulwark from wood. When the boats pass each other, you then obtain a wet jouster, pushed in water by his rival! Undoubtedly you will find a similarity with the chivalrous combat of antan. Be in the public and attend the tournaments of jousters in Sète, Palavas, or Grau du Roi.

  SAGNE

In addition to the exploitation of sea salt and the agriculture of rice, the camarguais collect the sagne (reed), in the marshes of Charnier near Gallician. Also called straw, it serves to cover roofs of the camarguaiseses houses.

  THE SMALL TRAIN OF PALAVAS

The old ones of Montpellier are proud to tell you their memories; the small train of the sea is included. This convoy carried out a tour with the pastoral pace, of a dozen kilometers between Montpellier and Palavas. A jorney to the picturesque beach, where one had time to gather poppies and to go up on board. Albert Dubout (draughtsman) did not hesitate to caricature and name this train "the local train". More daring than the small train, Lez takes its source in the field of Restinclières to 12 km in the North of Montpellier. Arrived in the large city, he joined the layout of the train and will be thrown in the sea by the channel of Palavas. It is also to the will of Lez that the Montpelliérans let go themselves to the pleasure of the rowing, while the famous “lavandièreses” rinsed in the good mood their cloths on the shore
