The idea of a channel connecting the Atlantic to the Mediterranean
was not the imagination of only one man. However of
a large economic asset for France, the project was
proposed without effect under Charlemagne, François
the Ist or Henri IV. In 1662, Pierre Paul Riquet,
thanks to his genius, unearthed water necessary for
the food of the future Channel of Midi. He proposed
to prefinance the work. According to the legend, he
found the solution on the plate of Naurouze, near
to the fountain known as la Grave. A stone was detached
and formed a stopping. Two brooklets formed themselves,
one in direction of the Atlantic and the second towards
the Mediterranean. Seventeen years of labour and 12.000
men were necessary to achieve this technical prowess,
connecting for centuries Toulouse to l'Etang de Thau.
Along the 240 km, you will not discover less than
328 328 works of art, of which the tunnel of Malpas,
locks of Fonsérannes and so much of others
which prove the gigantism of this work.
