Archeological
site of Alba-the-Roman:
It is in the heart of the territory of the commmune
of Alba-the-Roman, under the wine plain, that one
excavates today the vestiges of the ancient city,
which was 1st in IVe S. ap. J.C.., the chief place
of the city of Helviens and the first episcopal
siege of the area. With the foot of the current
village grouped around the castle, the ancient city
covers 30 hectares.its surface today is well circumscribed
by the necropoles, Saint-Pierre (IIe-IVe S ap. J.C.
and Saint Martin's day (Ier-IIe S ap. J.C.). Its
northern district, in Bagnols, concentrates the
popular habitat and undoubtedly the commercial activity.
In the east, the suburban villa of Saint Martin's
indicates the passage of the city to the countryside;
in the south-west, it is the sanctuary of Basalts.
To the south, the river of Escoutay and its terraces
limit the urban expansion naturally. Deprived of
enclosure, Alba is an open city. The large features
of its town planning take shape with its axes of
circulation and the establishment of its districts:
monumental center (theatre, public buildings, forum),
residential district (LePinard, Planchette, Téoule).
The succession of archaeological building sites
during these last years, made it possible to discover
urban topography of this chief place of the city
and to outline the evolution of the Roman city between
Ier and IVe S ap. J.C....
