MUSEUM OF THE CERAMIC
A JOURNEY IN THE
COUNTRY OF THE CERAMIC
Situated in a building from the middle of XVIII-th century
(1742), the documentation centre of the ceramic collects numerous
pieces dating from the gallo - Roman era till our days and
immortalizes the fame of the arts of the table through 14
rooms.
The ceramic, daughter
of the ground and the fire.
Art of shaping and the cooking of the potteries, the ceramic
arose from the marriage of the ground (and in particular of
its clayey material) and the Fire. Your journey begins so
with a meeting with the Material in the raw state, the various
clays and by a return to the antique origins of the cooking
of which the gallo - Roman oven of III-th century is a magnificent
vestige. In the course of time, techniques become clearer,
decorations appear, at first sculptured then printed or painted.
The mythical fusion of Elements gives objects of art!
The ceramic of the
people and traditions!
Beyond its natural resources and beyond its geographic position
of river, railway and road crossroads, DIGOIN owes its reputation
and its history to the quality of the work of its earthenware
makers. The implanting of Sarreguemines's earthenware factories
in 1874 thanks to the German annexation of Alsace-Lorraine
as well as the development of Stoneware and Pottery and the
Company of Ovens (future ALLIED) mark the industrial turning
point of the city. Its population doubled, workers are no
more sufficient. The rural village becomes the capital of
the ceramic. Through the exposed collections and works of
ceramic, it is the know-how and the work of earthenware makers
of Digoin that one honours.
The ceramic wakes
your recollections..
Unique pieces with the refined decoration of the Pyroblan
earthenware specially conceived for communities, the rich
collections of the museum invite you in a pleasant trip through
your own recollections. Witnesses of the evolutions which
marked our daily life, these pieces remind us the inside of
our parents or grandparents. The variety of decorations, their
originality, the choice of forms or of colours, the quality
of realizations, will fascinate you.
