HISTORY
The remote past of Trémaouézan left very few
traces. Nevertheless, several sites carry testimonys of occupations
by civilizations going up to prehistory and antiquity.
Since the Middle Ages...
The very old existence of the worship of saint Jean, principal
owner of Templars, a worship to which testify a vault dedicated
to the saint in the church and a monumental fountain and relics
that make it possible to think that Trémaouézan
was a place of pilgrimage and stays of Templars during the
Middle Ages.
These red monks, ménec' h-ruz, whose order was founded
in 1119 and was removed in 1312 by the pope Clément
V, traversed the area in their white dress trimmed of their
stamp, that is an eastern cross registered in a circle...
Until the Revolution
The commune was provided with two fountains:
the fountain of Saint-Jean-Baptist and Notre-Dame fountain.
The latter, famous for its capacities of cure, attracted all
the year round innumerable pilgrims. But, the revolutionary
authorities fill it due to nsalubrity.In1811, the project
to conect Trémaouézan to Plouédern caused
sharp protests: "With a population of 500 inhabitants,
Trémaouézan cannot be put at the row of a small
commune."
THE PAROCHIAL ENCLOSURE
The church Notre-Dame de Trémaouézan built in
the XVth century,
was considerably enlarged in 1597 by the junction of a vault
called "the Saint-Jean Vault". The bell-tower, of
a léonard type, destroyed by the thunderbolt in 1702,
was rebuilt into 1714 thanks to the gifts of Tréviens
*. the porch, sculpted in granite of Kersanton, one of the
most beautiful works of Renaissance architecture of our area,
rises, majestic, on the southern side of the church. At the
interior of the church, one discovers 5 altars, arranged in
a straight line along the Eastern wall, a catafalque in carved
oak of a rare model from now on, a splendid baptistry and
many statues .The ossuary, bordering the enclosure of the
cemetery, of rectangular form, with pinions provided with
crossettes and
symbolic animals such as the crawling (wolf, dog, dragon)
dates back to the XVIth century.
A cross-martyrdom going back to 1530 is between the ossuary
and the church, and carries 7 statues. The bubos on the column
would refer to the plague. The fountain of Saint-Jean theBaptist
(located at 200 m of the church), surrounded of a square enclosure
of 5 meters, shelters in a niche a statue of saint Jean-Baptist
under whom a stone in the shape of tomb of altar, decorated
of a head of angel, carries the date of 1656.
THE WETLAND OF LANGAZEL
TrémaouéZau has a rich and varied natural inheritance,
é, represented
by the wetland of Langazel. Principal source of Faber Wrac'
H, this particular site of 250 hectares is also the oldest
known peat bog of the Armorican peninsula (10 000 years) .
Te landscapes (wet meadows, moors, pine forests, willow plantations,
marsh) are marked by this water character. The reigning particular
conditions in Langazel support an original fauna and flora.
Many floral species are rare and protected there: plants carnivorous
(drosera, grassette of Portugal...), mosses (sphagnums ).
Moreover, the fauna there is very varied: squirrels, salamanders,
owls moyenduc, a multitude of butterflies and other insects
of the wetlands. The association of Langazel protects and
manages the site by
pastures of bovines and ponies. It organizes guided pedestrian
excursions, thematic naturalists excursions, classes of nature
and ecology... as well as the great annual festival of the
Heather (in the end of August).
