PORTO-VECCHIO,
A LITTLE OF HISTORY
In 1539, the Office of Saint-Georges, elected by the Republic
of Genoa, chooses the gulf of Oporto-Vecchio to install a
fortified town. Built on immense pink porphyry rocks, the
fortifications, with their five bastion constitute an excellent
rampart of defense against the barbaresque attacks
Saline
salt always played an important part in the economy of the
city which became for all the islanders "the City of
salt". .
In the beginning of September, salt is collected on the salt-water
marshes and offers a very beautiful spectacle to which it
is possible to attend from the GenoeseDoor in upper town...

SITES
The area of Porto-Vecchio combines in beauty all that Corsica
can offer. Superb beaches, shaded pine forests, a mountainous
and sumptuous rear-country.
Ospedale
The village had the memory of this old Roman hospital in its
name. In the XVth century, the inhabitants of Porto-Vecchio
went up to spend the summer there to be safe from the heat
and malaria which reigned on the plain. The Forest of Ospedale
is the departure of a superb stroll in a luxuriant vegetation
with the possibility of bathes in "natural swimming pools"...
A dynamic city...
Oporto-Vecchio, third town of Corsica and important economic
and tourist pole, offer an animated cultural life, an intense
and varied night life, as well as exceptional sites to combine
all the pleasures; discovery, idleness, sports, visits...
The building sheltering the Communal Arts centre and the Regional
Cineclub of
Corsica comprises two rooms, respectively of 350 and 120 seats,
conceived at the same time for the cinema, the theatre, the
dance, the music, but also the conferences and seminars. The
Bastion of France, magnificiently restored, constitutes a
remarkable space which accomodates throughout the year prestigious
events, concerts, and exhibitions...
the municipal marina of a total capacity of 450 rings can
accomodate in season a hundred boats from 5 to 40 M.

Aiguilles de Bavella... The mountainous forests plunging towards
the splits and the beaches which take care of two hieratic
Genoese towers... The maquis is crossed by limpid torrents,
which run at the rhythm of the cascades, of the "toboggans"
and other natural swimming pools
