MEAUX
TO
THE DISCOVERY OF MEAUX COUNTRY. MEAUX TOWN OF ART AND HISTORY
Since the Gallo-Roman time, the city of Meaux saw the growing
of the men, established at the edge of the Marne, living
out of the trade of corn collected in the rich plains of
Multien. Today, reign in this city a merry activity which
the centuries of history did not disturb....
THE EPISCOPAL CITY OF MEAUX
Anchored at the heart of the city, and safe from its ancient
ramparts, the Saint-Etienne cathedral rises above the roofs
of the city. Begun in XIIth century and completed in XVIth
century, this
building shelters the tombs of the bishops of the city,
whose Bossuet celebrates it, "the Eagle of Meaux"..
The tower of the cathedral takes care on a monumental episcopal
unit, built out of limestones stones of the Brie, witness
of the perenniality of one bishop who appeared among the
most powerful of France.
From the court of reception, one discovers the house of
the Old Chapter, old barn with the files of the bishop and
its covered staircase, of Renaissance style.
