In the heart of the Brie,
the town of Coulommiers, famous in particular for the cheese
which bears its name, involves the visitors on the steps
of its history, from its Gallo-Roman origins to our days.
THE COMMANDERY OF THE TEMPLES
Built on a plate dominating the city, The Commandery of
Temples, out of sandstone and grinding, was built by the
monks soldiers in the XIIth century. In 1314, after the
dissolution of the Order of the Temple by Philippe le Bel,
the Commandery is managed by a royal management before becoming
property of the monks of the Hospital of Saint-Jean of Jerusalem.
Then, with the Revolution, the whole of the buildings and
the grounds is sold like national good and farmers settle
then there. Today safeguarded by an association, the ATAGRIF,
the Commandery is visited and preserve also an astonishing
planted medieval garden of 250 plants used by the community
of the monks soldiers.
THE PARK AND THE MUSEUM OF THE
CAPUCHINS
In the HEART of the city, the park of the Capuchins with
the centenary trees welcomes the walker,
Here,
the Duchess of Longueville built a sumptuous castle in XVllth
century, which inspired the decoration of the novel "the
princess of Clèves". Alas, out of this residence
only some ruins remain. The vault of the Capuchins, enclosed
by the old ditches, brings its reflection in their water
and adds to the romantic charm of this place. The vault,
set up at the same time as the castle, became the museum
of the city. One can see there an exhibition of the historical,
archaeological collections and arts and popular traditions.
The originality of this museum is without any doubt its
cave of rubble decorated with shells.
