From Charlemagne to Lorraine at the
middle of Europe
In the year 800, the Charlemagne Emperor reigns over all
Western Europe. In 843: the Treaty of Verdum dismembers
the Empire between the grandsons of Charlemagne: Lothaire
obtains the provinces between the Rhine and Meuse. Lothaire
II receives in 855 a third of this space which will take
the name of Lotharingie, the kingdom of Lothaire. This kingdom
is divided into two shares into 959 forming Low-Lorraine
including Brabant and the country of Liège, and High-Lorraine
made up of the countries of Metz, Toul, of the Vosges and
the areas corresponding to old Belgium. Lorraine was a long
time in the search of its unity, but two entities persist:
the three bishoprics (Toul, Metz and Verdun) and Ducal Lorraine.
From the XV th to the XVIth century, the Dukes of Lorraine
couldpreserve
the independence of their duchy while in the XVIth century
Metz entered the Kingdom of France. With the Thirty year
old War, the XVIIth century opens the doors of the duchy
to the French. It is attached to France with the death of
Stanislas in 1766. In 1871, with the treaty of Frankfurt,
Germany annexes a part of the departments of Moselle and
Meurthe and creates the imperial ground of "Elsass
- Lothringen". After the war of 14-18, the "DER
of Ders", the Unknown Soldier is selected in Verdun.
The history is repeated at the time of the annexation of
1940 and it is necessary to await the Allies to tear off
the Release of Lorraine between August and November 1944.
Today Lorraine, fatherland of Robert Schuman, opens resolutely
in Europe.
