The Fortified towns
The Fortified towns are the witnesses of the new urban development
in the South-west of France during the Middle Age Because
of their number and their characteristics. TheFortified
towns are considered by the specialists in the history and
the town planning as the most original formula. The regularity
of the plan, the presence of a market or a “covered”
place are the most current architectural characteristics.
But they did not know, because the creation of the country
house must be preceded by the signature of a feudal treaty
(paréage)which one regards as a "Charter of
Foundation" which defines the rights and duties of
the inhabitants of the new city. After Montauban, founded
in 1144, that one regards as the prototype of theFortified
towns, Tarn-rt-Garonne saw the birth of numerous cities
which knew to perpetuate nine centuries of art and history.
Among the most remarkable let us quote: Beaumont de Gomagne
(1276), Réalville (1304), Montjoi (1268) and Castelsagrat
(1269).
