arsenal

The arsenal is a "city within a city". In 1490 the first trained crews for the vessels of the King and the Darse Vieille built under Henri IV (1589) added the Darse Vauban of Newfoundland in 1679. It is the arsenal of the Royal Navy to sail. The main extension takes place in the mid-nineteenth century, at the height of the marine steam and large colonial expeditions of the Second Empire and the Third Republic in the Mediterranean and the East. The dock Castigneau (1852) and Missiessy (1862) tripled the surface of the military port. Toulon became the first military port in the Mediterranean and home to the Prefecture of the 3rd Marine Region which covers the Mediterranean French coast.
After recently spun the 500th anniversary of its establishment, the range extends over 268 ha and 10 km of quays, has 30 km of roads, employs over 12,000 people and has about thirty buildings Force Action shipbuilding (Frégate Aviso Lance-missiles, submarines and aircraft carriers). The arsenal is not open to visitors.
