The arsenal is a "city within a city". In 1490 the
first trained crews for the vessels of the King and the Darse
Vieille built under Henri IV (1589) added the Darse Vauban
of Newfoundland in 1679. It is the arsenal of the Royal Navy
to sail. The main extension takes place in the mid-nineteenth
century, at the height of the marine steam and large colonial
expeditions of the Second Empire and the Third Republic in
the Mediterranean and the East. The dock Castigneau (1852)
and Missiessy (1862) tripled the surface of the military port.
Toulon became the first military port in the Mediterranean
and home to the Prefecture of the 3rd Marine Region which
covers the Mediterranean French coast.
After recently spun the 500th anniversary of its establishment,
the range extends over 268 ha and 10 km of quays, has 30 km
of roads, employs over 12,000 people and has about thirty
buildings Force Action shipbuilding (Frégate Aviso
Lance-missiles, submarines and aircraft carriers). The arsenal
is not open to visitors.
