patrimony and history

Alpine foothills of Mont Ventoux in the Regional Natural Park of Luberon, natural heritage of Vaucluse has always been carved by human hands. Valuable evidence of the influence of Civilization on the environment, admirable, Roman remains, the many fortified buildings and beautiful mansions are all symbols linking the Vaucluse to its prestigious past. Roman buildings bloom and leave inexhaustible treasures in the ancient cities of Orange and Vaison-la-Romaine. Later, the Middle Ages saw the silhouettes arise imposing castles and fortresses overlooking small villages perched high already (Mornas, Lauris, Ansouis ...).It must then wait for the XIV. For the history of Vaucluse take a turn quite unexpected due to an extraordinary event: the installation of the papal court in the prestigious Palais d'Avignon. This period splendor attracts musicians, painters, poets, humanists and dealers from all over Europe and accelerates the development of the city and its surroundings. Monasteries, monuments, gardens, mansions and churches, proliferate over several years in a variety of architectural styles ranging from the sober (Castle of the Tour of Aigues and Lourmarin) to (exhuberance (Notre Dame des Anges à l'Isle - sur-la-Sorgue, Les Penitents Noirs in Avignon). Thus, in Vaucluse, the spectacle is everywhere and blends with natural almost disconcerting to urban modernity.
