REGION OF SOULTZ
THE HEART OF ARTS AND POPULAR
TRADITIONS
The region of Soultz encourages to rediscover the origins
of the popular culture. In the west, the basilica of Thierenbach,
one of the most attended Alsatian pilgrimages since
its foundation in 730 by Scottish and Irish monks, comprises
a fabulous collection of exvoto. The ecomuseum of Alsace,
in Ungersheim, makes it possible to better know the half-timbered
houses and their bulding rules, the old village festivals,
or the former jobs like that of blacksmith. The enclosure
of reintroduction of the storks, as for him, gives all its
place to the bird which is a symbol of the area.
The ancient strengthened enclosure of the old town of Soultz
constitutes an excellent starting point to discover the
local richnesses: the Gothic church of Saint- Maurice
and his Silbermann organ, the town hall, the Renaissance
residences decorated with oriels and turrets of staircases,
carved porches and interior courses, old laundrettes...
The Museum of Bucheneck initiates the foreigner with the
history that is sometimes animated and the everyday life
of an already known corner of Alsace that is the Romans.
The Nave of the toys, installed in the Commandery of Saint-Jean
of Jerusalem, points out to the magic of marvellous objects
of all the times.
Pedestrian and cycle routes, clearly arrowed, leave the
villages, pass near farms inns, and carry out to the Road
of Crêtes and Grand Ballon. Among the goals of shorter
excursions, there are in particular the small valley of
Rimbach, the strengthened cemetery of Hartmannswiller, or
the Sicurani vault. The variety of the modes of reception
and gastronomy will allure you. Bare in mind besides that
the vineyard of the surroundings of Soultz, with Wuenheim
and its great vintage Ollwiller, is so appreciated, in particular
for the creaming of Alsace, prepared according to the Champagne
method.
